Toronto FC increased their lead in the Supporters’ Shield race by defeating the Montreal Impact 3-1 at Stade Saputo on Sunday.

With New York City FC drawing 1-1 against the New York Red Bulls, the Reds are now nine points clear at the top of the MLS standings.

Sebastian Giovinco was the man to do the damage to the Impact for the second time this season, netting twice on the afternoon. His first was his fourth direct free-kick to hit the back of the net in under two months.

Toronto doubled their lead after half-time when a quick attack from a throw-in led to Marky Delgado crossing to Jozy Altidore, who finished from close range.

The second goal knocked the stuffing out of the Impact, but Ignacio Piatti appeared to set us up for a grandstand finish by shooting low past Alex Bono from a short free-kick routine.

But Giovinco poured cold water on any potential comeback by connecting beautifully with a ball that dropped out of the sky on to his left foot.

With 56 points on the board, this is officially the most successful regular season in club history in terms of both wins and points.
