Steven Beitashour a couple of weeks away from Toronto FC return

The Reds’ top right-back is in line to make his comeback sooner than expected.

Per Sportsnet’s John Molinaro, Steven Beitashour is in contention to return against the Chicago Fire on August 19 according to Greg Vanney:

“We’re optimistic [he’ll return within] a couple of weeks, [a] possibility for Chicago. That would be an outside possibility, but then soon thereafter we think he’ll be ready to play,” Vanney stated.

A comeback against the Philadelphia Union (August 23) or Montreal Impact (August 27) sounds more probable, but that’s excellent news either way. Beitashour’s pancreas injury was so unusual that no one quite seemed to know when to expect him back, but I didn’t think we would see him this month.

Nicolas Hasler did enough against D.C. United, you would think, to earn another start against the Portland Timbers on Saturday, though Oyvind Alseth could also be available after a foot laceration.

But once Beitashour is available, he will be the man. The 30-year-old may not be as glamorous a name as some of his teammates but he has barely put a foot wrong this season. Finding someone else to fill in at right wing-back when he is not available has been one of the most challenging personnel situations of the Reds’ campaign so far.
