LA Galaxy 0-4 Toronto FC: The good, the bad & the ugly

A committed couch potato’s view of an emphatic road win.

MLS: Toronto FC at Los Angeles Galaxy Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

The Good

Victor Vazquez’s crack on goal from 20 yards out on the 18th minute… Kristian Jack’s nifty graphics during his pre-game chat with Andi Petrillo… Justin Morrow covering on the far right when TFC was caught upfield after an offensive corner… twenty-thousand fans chanting and cheering despite their club’s USL-type season. Remind you of another team’s die-hards?… Nicolas Hasler’s pass on Tosaint Ricketts’ first goal… the Galaxy sombreros sprinkled throughout the StubHub Center… the tic-tac-toe passing that led to Jonathan Osorio’s shot in the 44th minute… Minnesota beat Montreal at Stade Saputo. It might be time to get the fork ready… KJ’s half-time analysis of Vazquez’s free-kick. Nice work… Michael Bradley repeatedly reading the play and sweeping up throughout the match… Osorio’s best Marky Delgado impression. It was Oso’s quick pass to Vazquez that led to Ricketts’ second goal… Alex Bono with not only a clean sheet, but an assist as well… is ‘The Magician’ Vazquez’s official nickname?… ‘dos santos’ translates to ‘two saints’. Good thing, too. The Galaxy will need divine intervention to turn this mess around.

The Bad

Sigi Schmid’s decision to try to match TFC by also playing a 3-5-2. The odds were always against this working for a struggling squad… the smoke at the start of the game. Looked like fog in Scotland… the game played like a Scottish Premiership match as well – Celtic versus Partick Thistle, anyone?… Schmid’s wardrobe. I know that he has accomplished more in MLS than I ever will, but there’s little excuse for wearing a clearance-rack polo on the sidelines… Delgado dropping like a rag doll after being whacked by Bradford Jamieson. LA didn’t deserve a yellow for that… Chris Mavinga’s Emmy-winning performance after being fouled early in the second half… Vazquez’s uncharacteristically sloppy pass with an empty LA net in the 53rd minute… Osorio and Bradley’s giveaway that led to LA’s one true chance on goal. Thank heaven, Giovani dos Santos missed the target.

The Ugly

TSN’s inability to proof-read. Does someone do this just to test me? Here we go: the graphic at the beginning of the game showing ‘Ashtone Morrow’ starting in midfield (thanks to one of my eagle-eyed daughters for spotting that); the assistant referees listed as Adam ‘Ganer’ and ‘Baldomera’ Toledo. It’s ‘Garner’ and ‘Baldomero’. (By the way, they did it twice!); the graphic listing ‘Edwards’ replacing ‘Edwards’ in the 76th minute; the graphic showing LA with 14 shots in the 85th minute. They actually had three… missing the Vazquez free-kick in real time. No one needed a close-up of Hugo Arellano’s face. (Not TSN’s fault, by the way. Blame the host network’s feed.)… the network promo for SportsCentre in the middle of the match. That darn intern kept hitting the button, and we were repeatedly treated to cuts in the action. Pick your favourite ‘dos santos’ and pray that this intern is relieved of his duties sooner rather than later.
