Sebastian Giovinco called up to Italian national team

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

In a pretty shocking piece of news this morning, Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco was named part of the Italian national team squad for the upcoming international window. The Atomic Ant hasn't featured for his country since October 2015, back when he hopped off a plane and almost immediately helped TFC secure their first ever playoff berth by scoring this incredible goal against the New York Red Bulls:

Seba has 23 caps for Italy in his career, but at the age of 31 nobody was expecting him to receive the call again, especially since the Azzurri are transitioning toward youth for the next World Cup cycle.

Giovinco will be available for the side’s two upcoming matches, and Oct. 10 friendly against Ukraine and a UEFA Nations League game on Oct. 14 against Poland. With TFC’s next game after the break coming on Oct. 17, it may be possible for Seba to rejoin the club in time for that match with D.C. United.
