As the self-proclaimed USMNT correspondent for Waking the Red, I have to share some of the recent news items relating to the subject. To bring you up to speed, here are a few key items to note:
Coaching: Gregg Berhalter has been appointed as the new permanent coach of the USMNT as of December 2, 2018. The “search” lasted more than a year after the USMNT’s epic failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Berhalter’s resume isn’t the most sexy with his only head coaching positions being held at Hammarby IF, who play in Sweden’s top flight, and most recently at Columbus Crew SC for the last five years. Berhalter’s appointment marks a new era for the team and allows me to finally stop complaining about the lack of direction for this squad.

Players: Michael Bradley has been recalled for the January 2019 national team camp, which will see the U.S. play friendlies against Panama and Costa Rica. Bradley will be joined by Marky Delgado and Alex Bono, both of whom have been regulars at the past few camps. Competition for the TFC trio will be abundant on the national stage as their respective position rivals emerge (see Zack Steffen, for instance). The crystal ball remains hazy for their international futures but will surely become more clear as time goes on.
