Toronto FC favoured to repeat as MLS Cup champions

The bookies like Toronto FC’s odds of defending at least one of their trophies in 2018. According to at least two separate oddsmakers, TFC are odds-on favourites to win this year’s MLS Cup, with the regular season about to begin this weekend.

According to ProSoccerUSA, Bovada has the Reds as pretty heavy favourites with odds of 3.5 to 1. No team is particularly close to that, Atlanta United and the Seattle Sounders coming next at 8 to 1 each.

Bovada also lists the Portland Timbers (9 to 1) and New York City FC (10 to 1) as potential contenders. Personally, I think the smart money might be on NYCFC there; they’re not particularly likely to beat TFC or Atlanta, but a 10 to 1 return is underselling them.

Another sportsbook also favours the Reds (I think they all do), but not quite as decisively. As Dirty South Soccer reported, Westgate Las Vegas Sportsbook has TFC 4 to 1 favourites, with Atlanta quite close on their heels at 6 to 1.

The Reds have an improved squad from last year, with the additions of Gregory van der Wiel, Auro, and Ager Aketxe. Just months removed from the best season in MLS history, it’s hardly surprising to see them favoured for MLS Cup.

I’d be perhaps more interested in seeing Supporters’ Shield odds, though; as we know all too well, the playoffs can be a crapshoot, and any of the teams mentioned (if not other dark horse candidates) could emerge with the MLS Cup. I’d probably guess TFC could be even more heavily favoured for the season-long title.
