Wait, what happened to being favourites? Toronto FC allowed an early goal and never quite looked comfortable in a 2-1 loss to Chivas Guadalajara at BMO Field in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final on Tuesday.
It is a loss that now sees Toronto FC needing their first ever win in Mexico in order to become the first MLS side to lift the trophy in the tournament’s current iteration. On this week’s edition of the Footy Talks Podcast, Mitchell Tierney and Charlie O’Connor-Clarke talk about what went wrong.
They dive into several topics surrounding the match, including how much Toronto’s recent bevy of injuries played a factor on Tuesday, what to do about Jozy Altidore if he isn’t completely fit, and what Toronto can do to turn things around.
They also preview this weekend’s fixture against the Houston Dynamo, where a largely reserve Toronto FC side will take to the pitch once again while the rest of the team prepares for the CCL. Heck, Greg Vanney might not even be there.
The pair discuss whether this is the right decision, and if the team is justified in sacrificing league matches in order to have a better chance at winning the Champions League.
Finally, the show talks a number of stories out of Europe including the Copa del Rey final this weekend, Manchester City winning the Premier League and a live bear at a Russian third division game.
