Bad news this morning, Toronto FC fans. It looks like, despite making brief appearances in Leg 1 of the CONCACAF Champions League final against Chivas last week, neither Justin Morrow nor Chris Mavinga will be available for tonight’s second leg.
Both players have been absent from training down in Guadalajara, and they flew down to Mexico separate from the rest of the team, joining them on Tuesday. So, TFC will be without two key starters from the 2017 MLS Cup final, without both of whom they managed to beat Club América just a few weeks ago.
Morrow picked up his calf injury in the CCL quarterfinal against Tigres, and Mavinga’s sports hernia began bothering him around the same time. So, it’s likely that Ashtone Morgan will again start for TFC at left back, and Gregory van der Wiel, Drew Moor, and Eriq Zavaleta will form the back three, with Nick Hagglund also out long-term.
Victor Vazquez is apparently in contention to play some part tonight, although it certainly won’t be a 90-minute appearance. He’s been participating in training, but with sensation from his nerve issue still lingering in his back and legs, he’s not as mobile as he normally is. He could apparently play if needed to, but probably in a substitute role, particularly if TFC find themselves desperate for a goal late in the game.
