Rate the Reds: Ryan Telfer the unlikely hero in big win

A goal and a great overall performance bag Telfer his first man of the match nod.

Toronto FC pulled out their third MLS win of the season on Friday, as they beat Orlando City 2-1 at BMO Field. Coming into the game without Sebastian Giovinco or Jozy Altidore, the Reds needed some unlikely heroes to step up — and that they did, with goals coming from Jay Chapman and Ryan Telfer.

Fans rewarded Telfer with their votes for a very strong overall performance; he carved open Will Johnson on the left side repeatedly in this game. A rating like that has shot him up the Rate the Reds leaderboard.

Telfer just about edged out another fan favourite from Friday’s game, the yet-to-be-named squirrel that found its way onto the pitch and showed off its pace in a two-goal effort. We’re still waiting on the squirrel’s contract details, but we at WTR believe it could provide an excellent burst of energy off the bench late in games.

Auro finished third in the poll this week for his work along the right touchline, including the incredible effort he put in to assist Telfer’s goal. Gregory van der Wiel got some kudos for playing well out of position at left-back, and fans were happy to see the return of a couple centre-backs in Chris Mavinga and Eriq Zavaleta, both of whom looked good.

Things didn’t go quite as well for Jordan Hamilton, who was taken off for Tosaint Ricketts in the second half. His workrate was good, I thought, but he was plagued by poor finishing and, like the rest of his team at that point of the match, he struggled to get anything going inside the 18-yard box.
