Footy Talks Podcast: A look at Toronto FC’s player development

Who is the next Red that could follow Ryan Telfer’s footsteps?

MLS: Toronto FC at Colorado Rapids Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

This week’s Footy Talks Podcast is an all-Toronto FC edition! For 50 minutes Mitchell Tierney and James Grossi talk about the club from top to bottom, looking at the season so far and what we have learned about the Reds.

The biggest topic of discussion on this week’s show centres around player development after Ryan Telfer became the latest young Red to break into the first team and have an impact. The guys talk about Telfer specifically, but also the trend he seems to share with a number of other young Canadians who have made their mark with TFC.

Young players have certainly received more minutes than expected this season as a result of all the injuries and fixture congestion. There have been some mixed results in that regard. But how important could those minutes be to give these players a taste of the kind of soccer they will all be hoping to play consistently at some point?

The pair also discuss Toronto FC II and some of the positives that have come out of the difficult season they have been undergoing. Which players have taken a step forward and could be knocking on the door of the first team in the near future?

Also discussed: Toronto FC’s struggles with finishing chances, an injury update and whether or not fans should worry about Toronto FC II’s continued struggles in terms of results.
