It might have been the only good news for the club in the past few weeks. After plenty of interest from Europe and other locations, Jonathan Osorio is staying home after signing a lucrative new contract with Toronto FC.
The deal will reportedly make him one of the top paid players on the squad as the 26-year-old Canadian enjoys far and away the best season of his career. It is in many ways a statement of recognition for the club’s most capped player, who recently played his 200th game for Toronto FC.
If you are wondering how this new deal might affect the club, read Oliver Platt’s excellent article on the subject. However, this new contract has bigger importance than just that. It is a net positive for all of Canadian soccer as well.
Mitchell Tierney and Gavin Day discuss the impact Osorio’s new contract might have on Canadian soccer on the latest Footy Talks Podcast.
Since it’s the international break, the pair also delve into all things Canadian men’s national team. They talk about the strong roster called into camp for Canada’s nations league debut, and what can be expected of Canada’s opponent in the US Virgin Islands.
Talks also centres around Ballou Tabla, Lucas Cavallini, the Canadian women’s national team and a huge year for that program. The guys also finish up by talking about the Champions League draw and Gavin’s favourite club Arsenal.
