The first half was a cagey affair with neither side threatening much, although Alejandro Pozuelo asked plenty of questions of the Impact’s backline. It wasn’t really a 45 minutes to write home about, minus perhaps some fireworks between Michael Bradley and a few Impact players.
TFC came out harder in the second, with Tsubasa Endoh coming into the game for an injured Nick DeLeon. Just around the hour mark, Pozuelo jumped on a lovely flick-on and, with no defenders able to commit, he fired a laser beam into the net from about 25 yards.
Not long after, the teams were sent to their dressing rooms as the heavens opened up and lightning flashed in the area. It was truly coming down in sheets, leading to this hilarity:
The half-hour interval deflated TFC’s budding momentum a little, letting Montreal take the upper hand a little in the first few minutes after returning to the pitch, but ultimately the Reds and their new-look centre-back pairing held firm.
The Reds were a little lucky not to concede in stoppage time, with an Omar Browne chance in particular coming worryingly close.
However, it was Jozy Altidore who found the net at that point. Showing that he’s clearly learned something from his time as Sebastian Giovinco’s teammate, he scored a forceful free kick from around the middle of the pitch to take the air right out of the Montreal faithful.
